A year-old murder of a senior police officer on a Northumberland beach remains unsolved, but rehearsals are going ahead for a Halloween performance of Macbeth at the ancient Cresswell Pele Tower.

DCI James Massey is given three spooky prophesies by three raucous women at a charity match after-party. Immediately, the first prophesy comes true when he finds himself face-to-face with an episode from his past he'd far rather forget, and DS Christine Sparks suspects he's being set up.

But then another murder throws up links with the first and Massey begins to worry about the third prophesy...

The one that says he'll face death before next the moon wanes.
